The truly free individual is free only to the extent of his
own self-mastery.
While those who will not govern themselves are condemned to find masters to govern over them.

I love this quote from the book War of Art.

What does this quote mean to you? Please read it again and before moving on with what I think…. take a minute to feel what you think about this quote.

When I read this last year I immediately typed it up and posted it on the bottom of my computer. It reminds me to be self-disciplined and how that self-discipline will ultimately help you achieve your dreams and goals.

Around the age of 14 I started painting. My mom allowed me to paint my entire bedroom what ever I wanted. I’m so thankful to her and my dad for letting me learn on those walls way back when.

Painting at age 14, I was very slow and unsure of what to do. I had no training other than my elementary art teachers (whom I love) and just started teaching myself how to mix colors. I was obsessed with Lion King at the time and decided my wall needed a giant Simba in a jungle! It was so out of proportion to the jungle and it took me several months and several layers to get the right color for Simba.

The reason I share this with you is because all that practice over the last 22 years has lead me to the artist I am today. I paint almost every day at this time in my life and I can finish paintings so much faster than when I was 14.

If you are a beginner to painting – WELCOME! You are among friends!

Artists really love sharing our souls and love for others to find their creative voice so don’t be afraid to start no matter what the age!
Margaret Keane (famous Big Eyes painter) just started teaching herself acrylic painting at the young age of 84… She is 87 now!

Discipline… although a confining word is actually not confining at all. Discipline helps you achieve your goals, discipline helps you become stronger and become more skilled at what you are working towards.

When I have a feeling of dread towards a project or a workout I always remind myself that discipline is what will always win!

I would love to hear of a time where you were disciplined and it made an extreme change in your life? It can be with art, fitness, whatever…. I’d love to hear about it!

Extremely Grateful,
Heidi Easley
