Make a Trick or Treat Painting

What better way to get in the spirit of Halloween than with a cute painting? I’ve created an easy-to-follow tutorial for how to paint your own trick or treat painting. Follow the steps below and see what you can create!

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Supplies for trick or treat painting

To begin, choose a canvas size, style, and color scheme. You can follow along with what I did, or change things up!

I used a 14 x 14 square canvas for this painting.

Step 2: Paint the Background

I decided to use purple and some black for the background, then add that classic orange-yellow color scheme through the pumpkin and candy corn.

Step 3: Paint the Scene

I started by painting the pumpkin freehand, using white paint. Not a fan of freehand? No problem! I’m providing you with a free tracer that you can use to recreate this painting on your own.

Next, add the stem of the pumpkin in black paint. The bird outline is next, followed by the moon and a placeholder square where your trick or treat sign will go.

Step 4: Add More Color and Shading

Okay, y’all – don’t be intimidated by this part. I promise it’s FUN!

Use your paintbrush to add color to the trick or treat sign. Feel free to use whatever color you want! Add shading with red, and orange paint around the pumpkin, and shade the crow and other details too.

Step 5: Write Out ‘Trick or Treat’

Here’s where this painting gets its name…the trick or treat sign! You can also make it say “Happy Halloween” or even your last name if you desire.

Step 6: Hang and Admire

Now it’s time to show off your hard work!

This painting would look so cute on a kid’s bedroom wall, on your mantle, or even on your front porch where people can admire the trick or treat painting.
